Generally any image with text above and/or below it that is attempting to be satirical or funny. A simple picture with no words can also be a meme if it has already been culturally appropriated as one. A lot of memes are of people or things pulling specific faces that can be used as reactions to situations.

The Caption competition is supposed to post an REAL image, where people then give a plausible/funny comment on what people are thinking in the image.
When the picture is edited, it's ALWAYS a meme.
